Scope and Contents

This collection contains multiple series. Each series will list the topic of the Intersession as well as speakers and other information. This collection contains both paper records as well as recordings in a variety of formats.

Series One: “Crisis in Confidence II: Corporate America”. Speakers included Robert C. Spencer, William N. Parker, Thomas Benham, Norman Marcus, William Proxmire, Jerry S. Cohen, Mary G. Jones, Edwin C. Berry, George E. Riddick, Caroline Bord, John Munkirs, James Sturgeon, Blaine Yarrington, John C. Swahill, William C. Caples, Murray Finley, Max Ways, Governor Daniel Walker, Philip M. Hauser, Harry Magdoff, and Fletcher Byrom.

Series Two: “American Identity: Tensions in the Myths”. This Intersession examined various topics dealing with American character; topics covered are American's role in the world, tension between nature and technology, need for excellence and equality, effects of popular and elite culture, and the value of ethnicity. Speakers included Robert Spencer, Dan Walker, W. W. Rostow, Frances FitzGerald, Paul Simon, Paul Shepard, James Cox, Mike Lennon, Charles Schweighauser, Dixy Lee Ray, Jonathan Kozol, Gail Parker, Mike Ayers, Sidney Hook, John Munkirs, Larry Shiner, Dwight McDonald, Tom Towers, Rich Shereikis, Leslie Fiedler, John Knoepfle, Oscar Handlin, LaDonna Harris, Gary Lesnoff Caravaglia, Tonjy Brown, Chris Breiseth, and John Squibb.

Series Three: “Science and Human Values” This Intersession examined the discoveries of science research in astronomy and cosmology, physics, ecology, and human genetics, their impact on human values, and their implications for public policy as well as the processes, methodologies and ethics of science.

Series Four: “Individual Freedom and the State”. Topics in this session dealt with individual freedom in the U.S., the historical and philosophic perspective of individualism, the right to control, the right to be different, and the right to be left alone. Speakers included Robert C. Spencer, Frances Fox Piven, Russell Kirk, A.E. Neier, Mulford Sibley, John Gerassi, Irving Horowitz, William Domhoff, James O'Connor, Carl Stokes, Thomas Szasz, Michael Novak, Kristin Lems, Peggy Lipschultz, Thomas Gerety, Lois Lipton, and Thea Barton.

Series Five: “Families”. Topics in this intersession included contemporary images of families, roles and functions of families, trends and transitions in family structures, alternative family forms, and families and public policy. Speakers are Alex B. Lacy, Richard Hey, Michael Marsden, Jane Howard, Marianne Ferber, Edward Shorter, Joyce Antler, John Demos, Arhtur J. Norton, Alvin Poussaint, Mary Hotvedt, Rae Lesser Blumberg, and Robert Rice.

Series Six: “Confronting Inequality”. This Intersession examines discrimination and inequality in American society, ways in which society has institutionalized inequality and the causes of inequality. Speakers included Clarence and Juanity Mitchell, Julian Bond, Robert Williams, Vine Deloria, Jr., Ms. Roberta Lynch, Bertall Ollman, Frances Modre Lappe, J.W. Davis, Michael Harrington, and Frank Black Elk.

Series Seven: “The Struggle for Peaceful Conflict Resolution”. This Intersession focused on alternatives to violence in approaching social conflicts in human affairs and examined familiar ways of viewing violence and resolving conflicts with emphasis on the community and the implications for interpersonal, national and international affairs. Speakers included Wilma Scott Niede, Alex Lacy, United Mine Workers, Pat Rosezelle, Shirley Chisholm, Nancy Ford, Larry Ramey, Eugene Dubin, Claire Nader, Barb Hayler, Lisa Leghorn, Poertner Anderson, Ron Sakolsky, Ryan and Steve Sachs, Joyce Bennett, and Charles Rankin.

Series Eight: “The Bill of Rights After 200 Years”. Topics include the meaning and history of the Bill of Rights, controversies on the treatment of the American Flag, freedom of speech, censorship and civil liberties. Speakers include Congressman Richard Durbin, artist Dread Scott (whose exhibits desecrate the flag) and Joseph Morris (attorney for opposition of Scott's exhibits).

Series Nine: "Preparing for the 21st Century". Topics include international political economy, political order and the decline of the nation-state, the environment and the work force of the future. Speakers include Congressman Richard Durbin, Dr. Helen Caldicott, Professor Arthur MacEwan, Professor Patricia Fenandez Kelly, Professor Mark Beissinger, Professor Roger Kanet, Don Fitz, Thomas Hoogheem, Barbara Garson, Jane Slaughter, Pat Rosezelle and Doug Kamholz. Faculty members and staff involved in the planning include Alex Casella, Kathy DeBarr, Maria Mootry, Steve Schwark, Doh Shinn, Anthony Sisneros, Bill Warren, and Peter Wenez.

History

The intersession classes were an intensive week-long event that was put on by the Public Affairs Center (PAC). These sessions fell under the Public Affairs Colloquia and brought in national and international figures of the time to address a particular topic. There were opportunities for both large and small group discussions with both participants and faculty members who taught these sessions. The Intersessions lasted through roughly till 1995.
