This series consists of manuscripts by elementary and secondary school pupils submitted to Jackqueline Jackson for broadcast on her show, "Reading, Writing, and Radio." The show was first broadcast from WSSR in 1975 and was also known as Reading Your Writing. Also included are "Gems" from a similar show in Wisconsin, 1970-72, and are grouped together. Jackson circulated a newsletter, "Empty Nest," among family members and friends. This series contains all issues for 1982-86. Additions in 01/2007 include school children's papers in conjunction with the radio program through 1991. Audio Tapes of Reading Writing Radio shows added 07/2007 include programs from the beginning of the series in 1971 through the last program in 1993. Jackqueline Jackson, aka Jackie, was an English professor at UIS for many years. She hosted a radio program entitled "Reading, Writing and Radio" that was broadcast to local schools through special receivers by the WSSU radio station. The collection donated by Prof. Jackson to the UIS Archives consists of the many papers collected from local primary and secondary school children each week that the radio program was broadcast (1971-1993). Some of the program topics/titles include: The Garlic Sang, Mud Between your Toes, Scab Sandwich, Mom the Mechanic, My Sister is Deaf, Please Call Me Vachel, Divorce Isn't the End of the World, Frodo Lives, Kids in Charge, Bored Out of my Gourd, just to name a few. Prof. Jackson would discuss a topic on her radio show and the school children would reflect and write on those topics. Then she and her staff would select certain ones to be read on the radio. From notes included in her files, great care was taken to be fair and include some papers from all of the schools that subscribed to her show. The kids loved to hear their stories read on the air. The files and files of papers collected over the years provides interesting reading, often funny but sometimes sad. Prof. Jackson addressed a wide range of issues for local school children to think and write about.
