History
The department of University Relations was a part of the initial founding of the University when it was Sangamon State University (SSU). This department dealt not only with contact between the staff, faculty, and students but also with the outside community. They issued press releases, news, media relations, and alumni relations. Currently at the University of Illinois – Springfield (UIS), these are handled by a variety of different departments.
Currently media bout UIS is handled by the Office of Media Strategy which is part of the department of Strategic Communication. Video services are handled by the Office of Electronic Media.
WSSR started broadcasting on January 3, 1975, as then Sangamon State University radio station. In 1989, the call sign was changed to WSSU. When SSU was incorporated into the University of Illinois system, the call sign changed again and became WUIS. In 2015, the station was rebranded as NPR Illinois. Additionally, Star One, the campus radio station, broadcasts on the same frequency.
