History
Beginning in 1972 with the class, “Justic, Crime, and Law within the Social Order” and with the program creation in roughly 1974 as “Justice and the Social Order” (both a B.A. and a M.A.), the Legal Studies has had a long history at Sangamon State University (SSU)/University of Illinois – Springfield (UIS). The department, from its early years, has had a focus on justice and interdisciplinary study. Larry Golden, one of the first faculty members, helped create the student-driven project that would become the Illinois Innocence Project.
The current department of Legal Studies consists of three options, a B.A., a Legal Studies minor, and a M.A.
