Scope and Contents
This collection contains the records of the Women’s Alliance, a community resource, networking, and referral center in Springfield, Illinois. The collection holds administrative and financial records, newsletters, newspaper clippings, event flyers and planning documents, and reference information documenting the Alliance’s structure, goals, fundraising, publicity, and its educational, cultural, athletic, and research activities. The collection is divided into five series: Administrative and General Files, Newsletter, Financial Files, Program Files, and Subject Files.
Series I: Administrative and General Files, 1977-1983, contains founding documents, meeting minutes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, property rental and ownership papers, and related documents documenting the administrative structure, goals, and activities of the Alliance, and their relationships with other community organizations. Arranged alphabetically.
Series II: Newsletter, 1977-1982, contains the Alliance’s newsletter, initially titled the No-Name Newsletter and later changed to Anima Rising, as well as guidelines and other papers relating to the publication of the newsletter and a mailing list. Arranged alphabetically.
Series III: Financial Files, 1978-1983, documents the financial standing of the Alliance. Materials include financial statements, tax records, insurance papers, and loan agreements, as well as correspondence, applications, proposals, and information regarding grants. Phone records partially document the volume of calls received by the Rape Information and Counseling Service. Arranged alphabetically.
Series IV: Program Files, 1975-1984, contains correspondence, flyers, brochures, planning documents, notes, reports, and related documents relating to the activities of the Women’s Alliance and other local organizations. Events such as art shows, poetry readings, dances, concerts, and film screenings are documented, as are the Alliance’s sponsorship of women’s sports teams, political activity in support of abortion rights and the Equal Rights Amendment and in opposition to the Human Life Amendment, and participation in the Springfield Energy Project. Arranged alphabetically.
Series V: Subject Files, 1974-1983, contains bibliographies, brochures, reports, papers, and newspaper articles on subjects relating to women’s history, health, employment opportunities and experiences in the workplace, sexuality, and related subjects. Arranged alphabetically.
