Biography

The Women’s Alliance was a women’s resource, networking, and referral center founded in June 1978 as the Alliance of Women in Change. The organization brought together various local women’s groups, including the Rape Information and Counseling Service, Sojourn House, and the Women’s Alliance Group, who were committed to the elimination of sexism, racism, classism, and ageism, and carried out a variety of projects and events in pursuit of that goal. The Alliance received a $20,000 grant from the Women’s Opportunity Giving Fund Committee of the United Presbyterian Church of the United States to establish and begin its work. In early 1980, the Alliance purchased a house at 1011 N. Sixth Street, Springfield, Illinois; later that year the group’s name was changed to the Women’s Alliance.

The Alliance published a bi-monthly newsletter which provided readers with updates on the organization’s activities and a forum for discussing women’s rights, the prevention of violence against women, women’s healthcare, and women’s involvement in sports, art, and the workplace. The organization held fundraising events and sponsored feminist educational programs including films, slide shows, speakers, panel discussions, and workshops. The Alliance held an annual Women’s Art Show as a cultural and fundraising event, and sponsored women’s basketball, soccer, and softball teams in the city-wide recreational department.

The Women’s Alliance worked alongside many other local organizations. They played an active role in the Springfield Energy Project, and maintained relationships with Access to Housing, Inc., Brainchild, the Springfield Branch of the National Organization for Women, and the Springfield Urban League. The organization’s Alliance House was shared by the Rape Information and Counseling Service and Ibis Counseling, and hosted meetings and programs from the Black Women’s Coalition, Springfield Women, Alcoholics Anonymous, and the Metropolitan Community Church.

The alliance sold their house in 1983, and dissolved soon after.
