Life insurance salesman, 1896-1968. Purchased Franklin Life Insurance Company of Springfield in 1939.

Brochures, letters, pamphlets, stationery, programs, photographs and photographic slides concerning the Franklin Life Insurance Company in Springfield and its growth under Becker, and his induction into the Illinois Business Hall of Fame.

Scope and Contents This collection includes a wide variety of interior and exterior views of Grayton, a mansion that stood in Taylorville, Illinois, from 1911 to 1962. Grayton was built (1911-1913) by Taylorville banker Eugene A. Vandeveer (1853-1915) and designed by Chicago architect Frederick Wainwright Perkins (1866-1929).The three story, 27-room, stucco and timber Tudor style house stood on twenty acres, including formal gardens, a swimming pool, biergarten, garage house, carriage house, and stables....

Scope and Contents Farmer and breeder  born in Woodside Township, Sangamon County, Illinois in 1841.  Purchased 188 acres of the Strawbridge Estate in 1883 including the homestead  built by Thomas Strawbridge Jr (1798-1880) in the 1840's.  UIS now stands on that farm.  Photocopy of a diary kept by Shepherd in 1878 regarding his farming and hunting activities, and trips to Springfield and the weather.  Also contains a student paper written by R-Lou Barker discussing the family history, a transcript of the C.M....
