STEAMBOATS AND INLAND RIVERS John Beatty describes river life: growing up on the Ohio River; steamboats; people who made their living on the water; salvaging logs on the Big Sandy River; lumber mills; saloons in Catlettsburg, Kentucky; and running whiskey during prohibition. He also recalls riverboat collisions, wrecks, and the salvaging operations involved. Also discusses diving to salvage scrap iron, operating a crane, running a tow boat and scrap derrick, and working for the marine underwriters Neare Gibbs & Co. as a marine surveyor.
