McDaniel recalls life in Springfield: childhood, Depression, church experiences, Grace African Methodist Evanglical Church (later United Methodist Church); race relations, segregation, and race discrimination; American Legion activities; and work experiences. Also discusses employment and discrimination at jobs in East St. Louis, Kansas City, Memphis, Mississippi, and Ohio at a steel company, paper mill, coal mine, riverboat, highway crew, and the railroad.
