Henry L. McCarthy discusses his family background, early education and work, the Depression, education at University of Chicago, work at DePaul University, work as regional director of the Social Security Administration, the Social Security Act, the Roosevelt Administration and the New Deal, WWII, service as Commissioner of Welfare in New York City in the 1950's, and his positions in the Illinois Public Aid Commission and Department of Aging. Also discusses Chicago, life in Springfield, politics in the 1930's, social work, teaching, and consultant work.
