ILLINOIS GENERAL ASSEMBLY ORAL HISTORY PROGRAM
Gilbert, member of the Illinois Senate from 1961-1973, discusses his political career: issues relevant to southern Illinois; legislative achievements in the areas of education, business, economic development and conservation; legislative and judicial reform; reapportionment; issues of health, welfare, and safety; budgeting; civil rights; ethics; industry and labor relations; transportation and crime. He also discusses his family background; education, attendance at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and at the University of Illinois; Illinois Reserve Militia duty, work as an agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and service as State's Attorney.
