ADLAI E. STEVENSON PROJECT
Evans, secretary of Adlai Stevenson from 1947 to 1961 and assistant editor of the Adlai Stevenson papers, discusses her relationship with Stevenson and recalls her secretarial duties, Stevenson's 1948 gubernatorial campaign, his governorship, aides and officials, his divorce, and social life in the Governor's Mansion. She recalls his switch from governor to presidential candidate in 1952, his defeat, the 1956 presidential campaign, speeches, his law practice, the 1960 presidential election, his reaction to being passed over for the U.S. Secretary of State position, and her decision not to join him at the United Nations. She also discusses Stevenson's home in Libertyville, Illinois.
