ILLINOIS GENERAL ASSEMBLY ORAL HISTORY PROGRAM
Clyde Lee, Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives 1939-41 and 1947-67, and member of the Illinois State Senate 1941-45, discusses his early life on a farm, education at Mt. Vernon Township High School, early jobs, entry into politics, service as City Treasurer and County Treasurer, and marriage. He discusses the first years of his career in the Illinois House and Senate; activities and leaders in the House, 1940 State Senate election, and his work with Illinois fairs. He also recalls his enlistment and service in the Marine Corps during WWII and his return to the House in 1947. Also discusses horse racing legislation, Cahokia Downs, agriculture, transportation, and education interests, Public Aid and financial matters. He also discusses the years after his retirement from the Illinois House of Representatives, move to Homewood, activities with horse racing, State Racing Board, recent Governors, and retirement to Mt. Vernon.
