PRISONER OF WAR EXPERIENCES IN WORLD WAR II
Kniss recalls his experience as a prisoner of the German army during WWII. He discusses his military experiences, D-Day, capture by the Germans, internment at Stalag XIIA, living conditions during his internment, treatment of prisoners, Red Cross packages, fellow POW's, daily routine and work details, keeping a wartime diary, and liberation by the Russian army. He also discusses the behavior of Russian soldiers, encoun-ters with German civilians and military personnel, return to civilian life, lasting effects of his imprisonment, and the treatment of former POWs by U.S. military and civilians. Also mentions weapons, food given to prisoners, and conditions in Germany near the end of the war.
