Knox, employee of the state of Illinois since 1962, recalls his years working for the Departments of Transportation and Personnel. He discusses his employment under the administrations of Governors Kerner, Shapiro, Ogilvie, Walker, and Thompson; changes in policy and organization under each administration; relations between state agencies; patronage and civil service in state government; AFSCME and labor relations, and state employee collective bargaining; evaluation of employee performance and the grievance process; reorganization of Central Management Services; and the employment of women, African Americans, and other minority groups. He also recalls his family background, youth in Springfield, education, and service in the Marine Corps during the Korean War.
