Biography
Charles Arthur Schweighauser was born on June 1, 1936 to Arthur and Julia Schweighauser in Alton, IL.
Schweighauser received his B.A. and M.A. in English from Williams College in 1958 and 1960. He taught for a year at St. Louis Country Day School, and in 1961 was hired as the first director for the James S. McDonnell Planetarium in St. Louis, Missouri, which opened its doors on April 16, 1963. During this time Schweighauser also taught astronomy at three area universities: Washington University, Saint Louis University, and the University of St. Louis-Missouri.
Schweighauser left the planetarium in 1965, joining Williams College first as Executive Secretary to the Trustee Committee (1965-1967) then as a research associate with the Center for Environmental STudies (1967-1971). He returned to St. Louis in 1971, first serving as the Executive Director for the Coalition for the Environment (1971-1972), then as a Project Administrator for a heart research program.
Schweighauser was invited to join Sangamon State University as a professor of Environmental Studies in 1973 by Craig Brown, whom he knew from Williams College. He taught at the university part-time during the 1973-1974 academic year while commuting from St. Louis and continuing his work on the heart study, and joined the university full time in Fall 1974.
Although hired initially as a Environmental Studies professor with the particular task of developing that program, he also began teaching courses in astronomy starting in 1975. A small observatory was built on top of Brookens Library that year to facilitate teaching of astronomy courses, and soon after the university began to hold public Star Parties. In 1991, a second observatory named the Henry Barber Research Observatory was established west of Springfield, this one dedicated to research rather than public outreach.
Schweighauser began teaching for the English Department circa 1983, from which point he held joint appointments as Professor of Astronomy, Professor of English, and Professor of Environmental Studies. Although he retired in 2002, he has continued teaching courses as an emeritus professor. He retained his position as the Director of the Observatory until John Martin took over the position in 2006.
Charles Schweighauser married Suzanne Japha on August 31, 1957, with whom he had two sons. He remarried on June 14, 1997 to Barbara Alice Jensen, who worked at Sangamon State University in various roles from 1980 until her retirement in 2003. She passed away on April 30, 2024.
