Scope and Contents
This collection is divided into four series: Sangamon State University Library, Sangamon State University Classes, Instructional Services Librarians: The Sangamon State Experience, and Alternative Education. Materials include memoranda, correspondence, reports, administrative files, instructional material, and scholarly articles.
Series I: Sangamon State University Library, 1956-1990 contains material relating to the early development of the Sangamon State University Library, including administrative files such as job descriptions, faculty evaluation processes, and organizational charts, readings on the subjects of library development and instruction, libraries policies relating to cataloging and loans, and memoranda and meeting notes from library committees. Arranged alphabetically.
Series II: Sangamon State University Classes, 1972-1988 contains material related to classes for which Florence Lewis provided library instruction. Materials include course planning notes and proposals, readings, library skills tests, and related items. Arranged according to course code.
Series III: Instructional Services Librarians: The Sangamon State Experience, 1985-1989 contains material related to Florence Lewis’ unpublished book. Includes book prospectus, notes, and her correspondence and contract with her publisher. Arranged alphabetically.
Series IV: Alternative Education, 1964-1973 contains material related to alternative education programs and the proposal for one in Springfield. Includes reports, proposals, correspondence, and readings on the subject. Arranged alphabetically.

Biography
Florence Lewis was born Florence Ruth Russell to Frank Russell and Catherine Ryan on June 26, 1923 in Gillespie, Illinois.
She received her Associate of Arts degree from Blackburn Junior College in Carlinville, Illinois in 1943. In 1972 she received her Master of Arts in Communication from Sangamon State University, and in 1977 she received her Master of Science in Library Science from the University of Illinois. Lewis served as the Head of the Circulation Department at Sangamon State University from 1970 to 1972. In 1972 she became an Instructor of Library Instruction Services, rising to Assistant Professor (1973-1982) and Associate Professor (1982) until her retirement in 1988.
She married Floyd Lewis circa 1948, with whom she had five children. Florence Lewis passed away on April 5, 1998.

Provenance
Transferred to the archives by Florence Lewis on July 30, 1974, December 3, 1976, and May 22, 1995. Additional materials relating to the early years of Brookens Library were transferred to the archives by the Library Dean’s Office in 2005.
