ILLINOIS STATECRAFT
Howard, political reporter and statehouse correspondent, recalls personalities and events from his career as a journalist covering Illinois government. He discusses working for the Associated Press, political issues, Depression, violence in the coal mines, Springfield, Governor Horner's administration, Chicago-downstate relations, the 1934 and 1935 Illinois Republican conventions, politics, Stratton and Kerner administrations, the Orville Hodge scandal, reapportionment, and the campaign of 1964. He also discusses his family history, childhood, farm life and education in Iowa, relationship between Quakers and Irish Catholics, attending Cornell College, his father's experiences working for the Marshall County Iowa Farm Bureau, marriage and family life, working for the Chicago Sun and the Tribune, memorable assignments, and his book Illinois: A History of the Prairie State.
