O’Connor was a stay-at-home mom who decided to take some classes at the newly-opened Sangamon State University to finish a degree in Communication. She participated in the CLEP program and worked with two professors, Gary Morgan and Sue Esslinger, who helped students to receive credit for their life experiences.
