De Grazia, former campaign manager and deputy to governor Dan Walker, discusses his education and early involvement in politics; managing Abner Mikva's 1955 campaign for state representative, service as Executive Director of the Committee on Illinois Government and of the Democratic Federation of Illinois. He discusses Walker's gubernatorial campaign and governorship; meeting Walker; the 1970 campaign for governor, campaigning techniques, commercials and the media, and the Walker/Ogilvie debates; Walker's governorship, relationships with agency directors, cabinet, State Legislature, media, Independent Voters of Illinois, Chicago politicians, organized labor, and the Democratic Party. Also discussed is the Better Government Association's investigation of "ghost payrollers", economic recession, amendatory veto, patronage, and the 1974 budget.
