Scope and Contents

Russell Halligan, grocery owner in Beardstown, Illinois, discusses his pioneering work in aircraft design and other aspects of early 20th century life. He recalls his interest in airplanes and their technology, construction and testing of the "Halligan plane," and outside interest in developing the project. He also discusses early 20th century social activities including Nickelodeons, river-boat shows, and picnics; transportation; WWI and WWII; and the family grocery and dry goods business. Also mentions Beardstown mineral water and the 1923 St. Louis Air Races.
