Scope and Contents

Butcher, Springfield businesswoman and owner of the Butcher Tavern, discusses Springfield in the early 1900's: its citizens and businesses, downtown, changes from rural to urban atmosphere, prohibition, race relations, and the Chinese regiment at Camp Lincoln during WWII. Also discusses her father's work as a coal miner in Pennsylvania and his role as co-founder of the United Mine Workers in that state, John F. Kennedy's assassination, the American system of government, political parties, and Illinois politics.
