Buckles discusses life in the early 20th century in Pawnee, Illinois. He discusses experiences working for the Peabody Coal Company, the Depression, conflict in the mines, and bootlegging. He also discusses the people and businesses of Pawnee, the 1911 riot and hail storm, 1918 flu epidemic, immigrant neighbors, and changes in the town over the years.
