ILLINOIS COAL: THE LEGACY OF AN INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY Borgognoni, coal miner, discusses his family history and emigra-tion from Italy, violence between the United Mine Workers and the Progressive Miners of America during the 1930's, tactics employed by the coal companies and the unions, hazardous working conditions in the mines, mechanization, cooperation among neighbors, mining communities in Christian County, and the varied ethnic and religious backgrounds of miners. He also discusses the operation of a family tavern which was frequented by PMA members, his upbringing and family life.
