ILLINOIS GENERAL ASSEMBLY ORAL HISTORY PROGRAM
Grindle, Democratic member of the Illinois Senate, 1957-1967, discusses his years in the General Assembly: legislative achievements in the areas of transportation, conservation, economic development, industry and labor relations, insurance and public aid, health, welfare, and safety; legislative, judicial, and fiscal reform; reapportionment; legislative techniques and ethics. He also discusses his family history and Welsh background, childhood experiences in Herrin, Illinois, education, naval experiences before and during WWII, service as alderman, as well as his life after the Senate. References are made to John L. Lewis, coal mining, the Birger-Shelton gang wars in southern Illinois, Ku Klux Klan, and numerous political figures.
