ILLINOIS COAL: THE LEGACY OF AN INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY Groh, immigrant from Austria-Hungary, discusses his work in the coal mines near Pawnee, Illinois, mine wars between the United Mine Workers and the Progressive Miners of America, coal mine operations, and his contribution to the construction of the Number Ten slope mine in Pawnee. Also discusses his education and training in electrical engineering, living and working conditions for miners, and the role of women in the mine wars.
