Scope and Contents
Bliss, long-time editor of the Montgomery County News, recalls changes in downtown Hillsboro, Illinois, in the 20th century. He recalls his work as a paperboy, beginnings as a journalist, the "boom times" of the 1920s, the effects of the Great Depression, and the impact of chain stores such as Sears and Wal-Mart on downtown Hillsboro. He discusses the construction and destruction of buildings in downtown Hillsboro, and the succession of businesses there. He also recalls changes in agriculture, local government, banking and education in the course of the century.
