This collection contains photographic materials produced by Richard Phillips and a nearly complete run of the Iliniwek newspaper, which Phillips published from 1963 to 1976. Materials concern the early history of Illinois and heavily feature small towns, unique architectural details, and historic sites. The collection is divided into three series: Photographic Negatives, Contact Sheets, and Iliniwek Newspaper.

Series I: Photographic Negatives, 1963-1976 contains negatives of photographs taken by Richard Phillips throughout Illinois and in other midwestern states including Missouri, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Images feature courthouses and other public buildings, homes, unique architectural and decorative features, historic sites, rural and nature scenes, and archeological work. Folders relating to archeological work may contain images of human remains. Folders are arranged according to previously existing ID numbers. This series has been partially digitized, and digital images may be available upon request.

Series II: Contact Sheets, 1963-1976 contains contact sheets with printed images of the negatives in Series I. Many contact sheets are labeled with the ID Number of the corresponding negative, location where the photograph was taken, and other identifying information. They are arranged geographically and by topic.

Series III: Iliniwek Newspaper, 1963-1976 contains a nearly complete run of the newspaper, documenting the early history of Illinois with articles focusing on pre-colonial history through the 1800s. Arranged chronologically. This series has been digitized, and digital access may be available upon request.
